Fortress Lake Retreat Hosted Trip 2019
We have fished the lake multiple times and have a great working relationship with the owners and staff of the lodge. For these reasons, we know that our hosted trips are a great value ad for anyone looking to fish Fortress Lake. Our 2019 hosted trip is in August and we cannot be more excited for our time slots. You can read about the lodge and see some video footage from our trip last September.
Fortress Lake is in Hamber Provincial Park. Hamber Park is in a remote reach of the province of BC, and is butted against Jasper National Park. The region is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are no roads, no industrial activity, and no motorized ground access. The only access is a 24-km hike to our location which limits the use of Fortress Lake to very few. The valley is dominated by several mountain peaks. The lake is at 4400 feet elevation and the mountains angle steeply to heights over 10,000 feet.
The fly fishing and the scenery experiences at Fortress Lake Wilderness Retreat are second to none – except, perhaps, the flight accessing the location. Getting there is half the fun.
The flight takes you near and over the world-renowned Columbia Icefields of Jasper National Park before landing at Fortress Lake. The Columbia Icefield is the only place in North America where water origins drain to three oceans – the Pacific Ocean (Columbia River), the Arctic Ocean (Athabasca River), and the Atlantic Ocean (Saskatchewan River). We fly near or past 7 of the 9 highest peaks in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The flight to Fortress Lake is a photographer’s dream, including vast, scenic views of the Columbia Icefield, the world renowned Maligne Lake, Chaba Glacier, Mount Alberta, headwaters of the Athabasca River, Mount Clemenceau, and Mount Columbia.
The Lake and the Fishing
Fortress Lake is 11km (7mi) long and averages 1.5km (1mi) wide. There is a short reach of the Wood River that we will fish on this trip. Fortress Lake is considered amongst the world’s finest brook trout fisheries, set in a stunning, world-renowned mountain location. While it is a fertile lake, it is set in a fragile ecosystem at the continental divide. The lodge is the only commercial operators permitted on the lake, no other guide, company, or services exist or are permitted. The fishing is as good now as it has ever been. Fortress Lake Retreat is catch & release for guests, though it is nice that periodically a trout snack will be served at the lodge.
Because our 2019 trip is in August you can expect some great sight-fishing, for trout that are beginning to show some more color as they begin to pod up for the fall. We are also expecting chance to fish some dry fly’s if the conditions permit.
